EARTH – KIDS’ PLAYGROUND & PICNIC AREA
I miss public parks, where the family can take a picnic or have a BBQ. The Earth Day event this year was great, showing off what is achieved so far towards making the space next to Pelangi School in Lotunduh a great park. Good on you, everyone, for tenacity! Now all we need is someone (in Oz and NZ it’s usually Rotary) to donate a solid, vandal- proof, coin-operated gas BBQ. No fi res, no fuss, and the money can go to playground development.
THE GODS ARE IN TOWN
From May 12 – 22, during Galungan, the Hindus believe the Gods visit us, perhaps why this is traditionally a good time for weddings! A lovely time in
Ubud, with many street entrances decorated to welcome the bride to her new home, penjors (tall bamboo poles decorated with fruit, fl owers, sweets and coconut leaves) lining the streets and groups of kids escort- ing barongs (big two-person masked pup- pets, symbol of health and good fortune who fi ghts against evil) winding through town, dancing, playing music and raising money for their banjar. Keep lots of 5,000 rp. notes handy, to hand out as you pass them!
FOR THE GOOD OF UBUD!
Life drawing session at Pranoto’s Gallery started slowly, the model had slept in. Eventually, one of the regulars put down her pencils and bared her nearly all, so 30 artists could begin their drawing, painting and scribbling, while waiting for the replacement. The sessions are a wonderful way to spend a few hours (Wednesday and Saturday, 10am-1pm), whether you are local or visitor, professional or absolute rank amateur. Models come in all shapes and sizes and can expect a piece of art for their efforts. Interested to model or paint? Phone Pranoto or wife Kerry on 970827 or 08123992536. For more info

TIME FOR REFLECTION
The night of the new moon, time to set new intentions. In May and June, Wavegarden musicians LeAnn and Carlos will lead New Moon “Scents of Sound Journey/ Meditations” (May 14, June 12), using crystal singing bowls, voice and organic essential oils, to clear emotional obstacles and amplify the power of intentions. Each night followed by an informal jam session - bring your instruments! For Ubud directions and reservations, contact LeAnn 0878 607 36851. Suggested donation: 100,000 rp. (See www.wavegarden. net).
BEST MOJITOS?
The mojito (or is it, mohito) is a very healthy drink, imbibed mostly for the vitamins in the lime, mint and in some versions ginger. Also contains sugar and rum, which is probably what got Ernest Hemingway interested in the original Cuban version. Other Ubudians have a yoga practice, or a xi gong practice. I have a mojito practice, though sadly I have let it slip lately (too much festival, yoga and dance). The best mojitos, by popular acclaim, are at Cinta Grill on Jl. Monkey Forest.
PAIN IN THE NECK
A friend has had a shockingly stiff neck for several months now. The kind you don’t notice all the time, but really hurts on the wrong angle. And so tight that a chiropractic adjustment was impossible. She had the good fortune to visit Taksu Spa, on Jl. Gootama Selatan, where a quiet discussion led to a week of “neck and shoulders” massages that gradually worked it loose enough to get a proper adjustment. 0361 971 490.
YES WE HAVE RABIES – DO SOMETHING!
Queue up for pre-exposure rabies vaccine at Toyo Clinic. Just be practical. There ARE confirmed
cases of rabies in banjars all around Ubud, including Peliatan, Sayan, Andong, Mas and Tegallalang. One of my mates said “there’s no point in the vaccine, if I get bitten I still have to get the big jab”, but she’s missing the point. If she does get bitten, she will only need one Verorab booster and not the expensive and rarely available Immunoglobulin (costs between 8 and 22 million rp, going by body weight!) Toyo Clinic ’s three step inoculation program is only 450,000 rp. over three weeks. Jl. Raya Pengosekan near the petrol station. Every developing country has something. Just do it.
THE BLACK BEAN AWARD, AND…
This one goes to Lili Malloy’s Black Bean recipe at Café Havana; best eaten with pork. Yum. Best Orange Almond tart at KAFE, but it’s not their recipe. It snuck in two Australia Days ago, and belongs to the much loved (or reviled, depending on your politics) Don Dunstan, Premier of South Australia in the 70’s, where he designed most of Australia’s current social justice legislation, wore hot pink shorts and short sleeved shirts in parliaments (in a grey suit era), introduced coffee tables on the pavements of the city (oh my how those conservatives hated him) and wrote a fabulous cook book. Please help me with “best” suggestions and other contributions; it will divert me from these rambles.
MORE COLLECTIVE NOUNS
Thanks to Iain from Lombok for sending in these humorous collective nouns: a fl ush of plumbers, a dash of athletes, a scribble of writers and – my personal favorite - a fl urry of cross dressers.

TO TIP OR NOT TO TIP
Do you tip? Aussies and Kiwis don’t seem to go in for it much, certainly not back home. People have asked me what is the right amount to tip in Bali and I don’t know the answer. No-one serving you earns very much, and I remember being VERY pissed off (can I say that?) when a TV celebrity tipped me 50 cents at the end of a long evening waiting on his raucous dinner companions at a city restaurant in Australia. The bill came to $300 (long time ago, would be much more now) and I remember going up to him and saying, “Here you are sir, I think you need it more than I do”. Winning no friends at all. What do you think?
