Natalie Savage gets behind the wheel on the way to La Rochelle during a trip on P&O Cruises’ Ventura

08:00 Get up and step into bright sunshine on the balcony. It’s going to be a beautiful day. I join in with tennis on the sports deck to work up an appetite for breakfast, but unfortunately I don’t win the match. I’m much better at it on the Nintendo Wii!

09:00 After breakfast we catch the complimentary coach into La Rochelle for a spot of shopping. After raiding the shops we bump into some friendly people from breakfast and compare goodies before stopping for a well-deserved hot chocolate and crepe at a pavement cafe.

12:30 Back on the ship we have lunch and a few drinks in Frankie’s Pizzeria.

13:30 I fancy a bit of pampering so go for a back, neck and shoulder massage in the Oasis Spa. The Port Day Special is £20. What a bargain!

14:00 Time to relax by the pool, read my book and catch some rays.

17:00 As we leave La Rochelle we’re taken to the bridge deck where we meet the captain and I pretend to steer the ship.

18:00 Head to The Exchange for a game of snowball jackpot bingo. It’s a tense game as more than £900 is at stake. One of us wins £15, but luck isn’t on my side and the big prize rolls over to the next day.

Gill’s Cruise Centre in London Previous jobs: Sales consultant at Thomas Cook How long in the job: Two years How long in travel: Six years Hobbies: Socialising, shopping and holidays

Best thing about your job: My colleagues always put a big smile on my face Worst thing about your job: Moody customers. If they’re booking a holiday they should be excited!

19:00 The Metropolis Bar is our next port of call. It has great views, pictures of New York and I pick up a Cosmopolitan cocktail before dinner.

20:00 I meet the captain again, but this time in the Ivory Suite for canapes and champagne. To my surprise Sue Holderness (Marlene from Only Fools and Horses) is up there as well.

20:30 Have to drag myself away from the champagne for dinner in the Saffron Restaurant. It’s a delicious meal of deep-fried black- battered calamari, sweet potato and prawn chowder, followed by pot roast rump of beef and a baked New York cheesecake to finish.

22:30We head back to The Exchange and join in with the Name That Tune quiz. We actually do pretty well too.

Afterwards we have a bit of a flutter in the casino and end the night in the Tamarind Club watching the guest band, Powerhouse.

03:00 After an exhausting but brilliant day, I finally get back to my cabin for a good night’s sleep.
