Golden touch

Spanish as it is, Tenerife might seem an unusual host for a Routes Africa event. But if this is your first visit to the Canaries, you’ll quickly appreciate the opportunities their location presents.

Lying off the West Africa coast, Tenerife is perfectly poised to meet its own ambition of becoming a four-continent hub, serving the needs of Africa, Europe, plus The Americas.

While Africa’s failure to deal with its own lack of an open skies policy is helping Tenerife achieve this strategy,

it is good to see the continent taking one issue seriously – security.

A new peer-review scheme (page 23) being piloted in Africa should not only help every airport that undertakes it to improve safety for passengers, but also to maintain it with future checks scheduled in.

Even with open skies being an ongoing issue on the continent, airlines are finding ways to sidestep the problem and drive strong growth and profitability, as an interview with Ethiopian Airlines’ CEO (page 16) proves.

“WE SEEWHAT THE IMPACT

OF MAJOR SPORTING EVENTS REALLY IS ON BOTH ROUTE DEVELOPMENT

AND TICKET PRICING.”

And there’s a lot of work to do. Our exclusive ASM analysis (page 31) shows just how hard north African countries like Egypt and Tunisia have been hit by recent terrorist attacks, causing once thriving aviation markets to flounder.

Meanwhile, with UEFA Euro 2016 kicking off and the Brazil Olympics under starter’s orders, we look at the impact of major sporting events on both route development and ticket pricing (page 38).

A round-up of key news from Routes Europe 2016 (page 13) also shows how valuable these events are for the air service community. We know that by attending and engaging with the event, delegates are already getting on the podium.

But if they want to win in such a tough market, they will have to work extra hard to exploit the opportunities available once Routes Africa gets under way.
