As well as significantly improving our understanding of climate change, the hyperspectral data of wo uld al so improve the q

value of information from Earth observat ion data for the here a nd now, lea ding to improv ed weather forecasting, c rop monitor ing and observing the health of forests – natural sinks of carbon. A team in the US, led by NASA, has also proposed a similar complementary mission called CLARREO (The Climate Absolute

Radiance and Refractivity Observatory). OPPOR UNI OPPORTUNITIES

An economic study in 2013 suggested that improved confidence in the eviden ce from missions like TRUTHS and CLARREO could m ean a global economic sav ing of $2-30 trill ion due to the damage prevent ed by better mitigat ion of, and adaptat ion to, climate change. Recognising its importance, the UK’s Centre for Earth Observation Instrumentation (CEOI) has funded studies to develop the science and prototype the engineering needed to reduce t he complexi ty of the mission, and the priority is now focused on getting TRUTHS into orb it –

something that c ould be achieved within three to five years.

to counter it, they won’t have the impact desired. TRUTHS offers an unmissable opportunity to improve our understanding of climate change, and our ability t o do something about it.
