A new and improved version of the VOLTCRAFT Gamma-Check-Pro Geiger counter is now available from Conrad Business Supplies. This provides a fast and easy method of detecting and measuring radioactivity, with both sound and visual indications to inform the user when freely selected thresholds are exceeded. It has an improved LCD interface, which uses easily identifiable symbols and values, a real-time clock with automatic leap year and daylight saving; and a mini-USB port. The device can also be used as a dosimeter, measuring dose pulses and pulse rates as well as pulse counting either individually or in a sequence. These measurements
can be taken over a duration ranging from one minute up to 100 days, although measuring a duration of 10,000 days is also possible. Not only can the counter be connected
to a PC for exporting data, but by using the free GAMMA Check Pro software suite it is possible to edit and export data sets, either directly to Microsoft Excel or to a CSV file. The device’s internal data log possesses an adjustable sampling rate that can be set to ‘replenish’ or ‘continuous’. A display signals the current memory utilisation.

A SELF-POWERED DIESEL TACHOMETER
A Wireless Diesel Tachometer, specifically designed to provide a simple, self-powered solution for generating tachometry readings from nearly any motor, has been launched by Jennova. The process is based on the company’s patented Electrodynamic Energy Harvesting (EH) technology, which powers the device and enables the unit’s magnetic induction sensors to read RPM pulses directly from the engine’s motion and produce instant data. The energy-harvesting
method utilises magnetic induction to power the tachometer’s RPM sensor and signal transmitter. This is achieved through the capture and enhancement of energy created when a moving magnet passes by the conductor. In order to create the magnetic presence within a diesel engine or any other motor, the tachometer’s small neodymium magnets are attached to the flywheel or ideally a harmonic balancer. These magnets then create both the opportunity to harvest energy and the

pulses needed to read RPM. In addition to providing highly accurate readings, the entire installation process is performed in four simple steps in minutes. This starts by placing two to four magnets from the Wireless Diesel Tachometer to the motor’s flywheel or harmonic balancer with a simple cyanoacrylate. After attaching the unit’s transmitter with loop pad to the back of the engine compartment and sensor head to the engine fixture or hose, the RPM gauge only needs to be mounted to the vehicle cabin. Once completed, the tach is simply
set to ‘four cylinder’ when used with two magnets and ‘eight
cylinder’ with four magnets. The company has also developed a
self-powered EH Multi-Sensor. This offers autonomous remote sensing capable of gathering multiple sensor inputs and sending the data package wirelessly to either the web or direct to device.

DATA GATHERING SYSTEM FOR THE MARITIME INDUSTRY
New from Parker Kittiwake Procal is the Procal 1200M data gathering system and control unit, specifically designed for maritime use by marine engineers. In addition to collecting and processing data from the company’s marine emissions analysers, this can send and receive data from devices which monitor exhaust gas scrubbing systems. This enables the collation and accurate reporting of data from various parameters, including SO2
, CO2 , NOx , PH, sea water
temperature, turbidity, polyaromatichydrocarbon equivalents, and wash water flow rate. The analysers communicate via
a serial data link to the Procal 1200M, which can be located up to 1200m from the exhaust mounted CEMS, and data from up to sixteen channels per exhaust gas scrubbing systems can be presented on an individual front panel. The unit is sealed to IP65; can generate detailed and accurate reports, aiding operators in meeting the stringent reporting requirements of today’s environmental regulations; and has three levels of password protection so is also compliant with the security requirements of MARPOL Annex VI.
