veryone who wins a Globe Travel Award is special, but
there are three categories which stand apart from the rest. These special awards honour individuals who make a real difference in our industry, whether that’s through a long and successful career at the most senior level, an original idea which helps a business work smarter, or by making a special effort to help others in need. These awards are judged by a panel of experts, but we still need you to make nominations.
w PENNY AKAM UNSUNG HERO AWARD Forget Superman or Catwoman – not every hero comes with a cape and a costume. The Penny Akam Unsung Hero Award, sponsored by Affordable Car Hire, is all about recognising individuals who get into the office early, help colleagues or customers without expecting anything in return, and generally go about their day trying to make life better for everyone around them.
Named after Travel Weekly’s
own hero, Penny Akam, who organised the Globe Travel Awards for many years until her death from cancer in 2008, this award shines a light on the touching stories of those who really go the extra mile. At the 2015 awards, that was Barrhead Travel’s Leanne Kane, who was always ready to pitch in during a crisis or work her socks off on a charity fundraiser, and before that, it was Tracy Burden of Midcounties Co-operative Travel, who went out of her way to care for a customer with cancer. w OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD This award recognises those titans of the travel industry whose influence extends far
beyond their specific job or sector to impact the wider business of travel. Sponsored by Gold Medal and
Travel 2, this has been bestowed upon such high-profile figures as Abta and Travel Foundation chairman Noel Josephides, who was last year’s worthy recipient. In a ‘who’s who’ of the
industry, the award has also gone to Monarch Travel Group chairman Hugh Morgan, IAG chief executive Willie Walsh, Sandals founder Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart and John Hays of Hays Travel.
w INNOVATION IN TRAVEL AWARD No business can afford to stand
still, and the travel industry is no different: we rely on original thinkers and problem-solvers to come up with creative ways to work better, smarter or faster. The Innovation in Travel
Award, sponsored by Travelport, recognises those individuals or companies which have dared to think differently by developing a new product or innovation – not necessarily related to technology – that has had a major impact on the market. Last year’s winner, WeSwap,

did just that with its peer-to-peer foreign exchange service, and has gone on to garner more national attention since the win. Other recipients have included Zolv for its SalesAssist call centre tool. How to enter: Companies can nominate themselves or be put forward by a business associate, provided the project is innovative, has a proven record of success, and comes from a travel business operating in or from the UK.
