The ship of things to come

Our proposed new ship will bring many benefits and will give the Isle of Wight a ferry to be proud of and a wonderful start to many journeys and holidays.

It will be the most environmentally friendly ferry ever to serve the Isle of Wight, designed to reduce environmental impact in several ways including:

• the fuel it can use

• a hull which minimises disturbance to marine life

• efficient on board power systems and the use of recycled engine heat to warm water and indoor spaces

With double deck loading, our new ship will improve punctuality because we will be able to load more vehicles more quickly.

And there’s another key benefit of introducing double deck loading – it means we can offer more space when most customers want to

travel. Having analysed years of data, we know that the overwhelming majority of customers book to travel on the hour, with much slower rates of bookings for sailings on the half hour. So we will run our new ship and St Clare on the hour. We will then have the flexibility to run sailings on the half hour with our smaller ships.

Subject to receiving all the planning approvals and other statutory consents, we hope to bring our new ship into service in 2017.

It is too early to say exactly what timetable we will need to run in order to meet the needs of our customers, but as well as providing more capacity when more people want to travel, we are planning to keep all our late, early and overnight sailings.
