LOADING & UNLOADING

Fishbourne

Our Fishbourne terminal is already well suited to supporting our new larger ship. The main work we will need to undertake is the installation of a new ramp to allow access to the upper deck. Construction will take advantage of the natural slope of the site which will minimise visual impact.

As part of the project we plan to adapt the current slipway so that it could be used as another means of boarding. This is important to providing backup in the unlikely event that we are unable to use the main linkspan (boarding ramp).

Portsmouth Gunwharf

Our Portsmouth Gunwharf terminal is set in the city’s busy harbour-side area within the Old Portsmouth and Gunwharf conservation areas. As it is a flat and relatively small site, enabling double deck loading for our new and modified ships will require a different approach.

Our plan is to give access to the upper deck from a new second tier of boarding lanes, this will allow vehicles to drive on and off the ships quickly and efficiently at two different levels. This will almost double the capacity of the terminal, leading to other benefits:

• There will be a reduced need to use the overflow parking on the north side of Gunwharf Road

• Congestion on the city’s roads will also be reduced as traffic overflow onto Gunwharf Road will be virtually eliminated

• Importantly, having all ferry vehicles on the terminal side of the road will reduce the number of pedestrians crossing the road, leading to both improved safety and traffic flow

Our plans also include improved customer facilities such as toilets, ticket office, retail space and foot passenger waiting areas.

In Portsmouth, as at Fishbourne, we are determined to be good neighbours and plan to use visual and aural screening during the works wherever possible.

Q.

• Do you agree that we are right to plan to reduce congestion on the roads surrounding our Portsmouth Gunwharf terminal by providing more boarding lanes on the terminal itself?

Q.

• What should we take into account when planning new customer facilities in our Portsmouth Gunwharf terminal?
