ABOVE: Flying white flags, Sunday extra GU- 1X approaches Chestnut Street in Upton, as a 1970 Buick Skylark waits at the crossing. Stephen Landry of Stow, Mass., provided the all-original Buick, creating some distinctive photo opportunities for a small group of pho- tographers on October 12, 2014. STEVE CARLSON
RIGHT: Conductor Ed Teague rides G&U 1751 across Hartford Avenue South in Upton as the crew prepares to switch customers on the other side of the crossing on March 27, 2014. Slow speeds and multiple grade crossings offer many opportunities to photograph G&U trains with relative ease. THOMAS NANOS
stop and protect orders for most crossings. To add a little variety to your shots, some dif- ferent views can be afforded by a short hike into the woods. Spots include a field off Old Upton Road in Grafton and a rock cut north of Chestnut Street in Upton, both of which af- ford areas off the road where nearly any car can pull off safely. No matter what time of year you visit, rail-
fanning the Grafton & Upton Railroad should provide a nice change of pace from the larg- er railroads of the area. From the beautiful scenery to the bucolic town centers they run through, any railfan should have a great day of train watching in this little corner of south- ern New England.
