T

he theme of the 2014 John E. Gruber Creative Photography Awards Program was “Lasting Impressions,” photography

worthy of display on a living room wall or even a museum. This year 90 photographers took part in the contest sponsored by the Center for Railroad Photography & Art, and every one of the submitted images lived up to the central theme. While the judges struggled with the difficult task of picking only three images for the first, second, and third place winners, they saw no losers among the entries. Founded in 1997, the Center for Railroad Photography & Art works with photogra- phers, writers, and historians around the world to offer a new and unprecedented view of the railroad’s influence on American cul- ture through the preservation and presen- tation of art and photography. The Center collaborates with many other institutions on

its exhibitions, including the Chicago History Museum, where the monumental “Railroad- ers: Jack Delano’s Homefront Photography” is on display through August 2016. Noted photographer, author, editor, and

railroad preservationist, John E. Gruber of Madison, Wis., was honored by the board of directors of the CRPA — an organization of which he was the principal founder — by hav- ing the Center’s awards program named for him in 2012. Gruber has been a photography and preservation activist in the railroad com- munity since 1960. See the winning photographs on display

at the California State Railroad Museum through the end of the year. Hear more about them and many more topics on railroad pho- tography and art at the Center’s annual “Con- versations” conference, April 10-12 at Lake Forest College, just 30 miles north of Chicago.

SECOND PRIZE

MATTHEW MALKIEWICZ resides in Mount Laurel, N.J., where he is the senior designer for an instrumentation/electrical/ process control engineering firm. Born in New Jersey, he has also lived in California and Colorado, which ignited his drive to travel and capture the country’s modern-day tourist steam operations. Vacations are now planned around and spent pho- tographing special railroad related events, private train photo charters, and historical places.

Malkiewicz’s fascination with trains started at the age of four months by watching a toy train run around the Christmas tree; he has been hooked ever since. Completely self-taught, creat- ing timeless images has become a passionate hobby. Early in- fluences include Don Ball, Jack Delano, Mallory Hope Ferrell, and, lately, Zack Arias. Matthew was the third prize black-and- white winner in the Center’s 2012 Awards Program, and he has recently been featured on the CNN International, Weather Channel, DPReview and SLR Lounge websites, and published in Trains and Shutterbug magazines.
