hope that the golfing Santa brought you everything you had wished for at Christmas – if not, you’ve only got yourself to blame as you obviously didn’t drop enough hints to your wife! And did you make any New Year’s
resolutions that were still unbroken come the end of the first week in January? Statistics show that half of us will break our resolutions by the end of January. Tiger Woods will no doubt have
resolved to move up the World Rankings as he currently sits in 32nd place, a resolution no doubt shared by another former World number one, Luke Donald, who is presently ranked one place further down the list than Woods. Rory McIlroy, who begins 2015 ranked

number one in the World by some distance, will have his eyes firmly set on the Augusta Masters, which kicks off on Thursday 9 April. Should he be victorious, the 25 year old McIlroy will become the second youngest player to complete a career grand slam (Augusta Masters, US Open, British Open and USPGA Championship). Inevitably, the youngest golfer to achieve this feat is Tiger Woods. And if he does don the fabled ‘Green
Jacket’ on Sunday 12 April, McIlroy will become only the sixth player to have achieved the career grand slam, the others being Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Exulted company indeed! Having ended 2014 criticising Phil
Mickelson for the way he lambasted US Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson at the post tournament press conference, I feel obliged to even things up a little.

I was an avid fan of Sir Nick Faldo
throughout the Englishman’s long and distinguished career, although, like many, I cringed when, aſter winning the British Open at Muirfield in 1992, his acceptance speech, watched by millions around the globe, included him thanking the press from the ‘heart of my bottom’ and singing ‘I did it my way’. Whilst commentating at last year’s
Ryder Cup, it appears that Faldo described Spain’s Sergio Garcia as having been ‘useless’ during the 2008 contest when Faldo was team captain. Faldo has been taken to task by Sam Torrance who last month told Bunkered Magazine: ‘To say that right in the middle of the Ryder Cup, what was (he) thinking about?. Really, it was pathetic from Faldo. I’ve no idea where he was coming from with that stuff. You can even quote me on that, I don’t care. It was beyond belief that one of our greatest-ever players would come out with a comment like that. Garcia’s not a team player? Have a look in the mirror, pal. Garcia’s one of the best team players we have. He’s an incredible kid, with the heart of a lion and he’s incredible in the team room." It is sad that Faldo did not engage his
brain before his mouth, but I also find it sad that Torrance felt he had to resurrect the matter some three months aſter it occurred. That’s life I suppose.
