eulogises over their latest product – how stretchy they are, how comfortable, how waterproof, how breathable. So out we go with our latest suit, wanting immediately to test it against the elements – only to come off the course disappointed with at least one aspect of its performance. It could be the collar not being full enough and ending up with a very damp shirt collar underneath, the cuffs which let water up the arms, the trousers not quite long enough, ending up with muddy, wet socks – and so it goes on. A number of my friends have used Galvin

Green for a number of years and swear by them, not for one particular characteristic, but in general. So, when my latest Ping suit decided to give up the ghost, I decided to invest in a set of what most golfers agree are the best waterproofs you’ll ever buy. I wanted a suit that was going to be suitable for
both summer and winter. Where I play we can get some vicious weather straight off the North Sea, so it needed to be sturdy enough to withstand the worst, yet light enough in feel to wear in a shower in the summer, without baking me underneath while I had it on. I settled on the Apex jacket in Electric Red/Black/Gunmetal and black Alf trousers. Not cheap, they retail at £469.90 for the suit – but boy, do you get what you pay for!

freedom of movement throughout the swing. Like most golfers, I hate the constricted feeling that waterproof jackets give, and as a result will not wear one unless absolutely necessary. I can safely say that the Apex jacket is the first jacket I have worn in which I don’t feel the least constricted. It moves effortlessly with the body throughout the swing, moving with you, rather than clinging to you, constricting movement, and therefore the golf swing in general. In very cold conditions, it is a joy to wear for its warmth factor. It cuts out even the coldest wind, leaving your core warm and functional. It features Velcro adjustable cuffs, a drawstring hem, water repellent zippers and a rain channel in the cuffs which results in guess what – no wet sleeves on your long sleeved garments worn underneath. It has a mesh inner lining which also helps to move or ‘wick’ moisture away from the body. Galvin Green logos appears on the back of the neck and leſt sleeve. It is extremely hard wearing and easy to wash (which actually results in even greater water repellence). And the best bit – it carries a lifetime waterproof warranty.
Alf Trousers Blending perfectly with
the jacket are the Alf trousers. Again, in 2 layer Galvin Green Gore Tex fabric, these are exceptionally well made and very comfortable. They fasten at the front with 2 press studs on the waistband, a fly zip and full length Velcro strip. Added to this is an adjustable drawstring around the waistband which can be locked by a toggle to the rear and covered by a purpose built pouch. Pockets have over flaps
and are deep and at a good angle to accept the hands readily on cold mornings. Different length leg lengths are available for different sizes, catering for all heights and sizes of waist. Galvin Green logos appear on the rear pocket flap and zip cover on the right leg. The leg zippers and Velcro fastening help greatly when removing aſter a round, especially when muddy and wet shoes are involved. Just as warm as the jacket, they are comfortable to wear in any conditions, are as easy to clean and maintain, and also carry a lifetime waterproof warranty.
Conclusion Galvin Green does undoubtedly produce the
best waterproof golf suits. If you consider rain- proofing, wind-proofing, comfort, workmanship, and overall styling they are exceptional. Yes, it is a large initial outlay, but in the long run it will work out a cheaper option than spending a lesser amount on a cheaper suit. It undoubtedly won’t have a lifetime waterproof warranty, will not be as comfortable or warm, and worst of all will make you feel restricted –it will also probably have to be replaced aſter a couple of seasons. Coupled with Galvin Greens unique layering
system – Shell Layer, Warm Layer, Cool Layer & Base Layer, designed to allow every golfer to attain the most comfortable clothing system for them despite the weather, a Galvin Green suit really is the place to start – you won’t regret it.
