IGPN: How does the European TCC tie in with this year’s Ryder Cup and the legacy that will be leſt beyond Sunday’s tournament?

KS: It’s very appropriate…the 24 players on both [Ryder Cup] teams will almost certainly have had a PGA coach from their own territory. The legacy I’m sure will be more knowledge for the teachers themselves, sharing of their own ideas, the technical skills and drills that they have imparted to their elite players and it will percolate back to their juniors in each of our territories, all of whom will come before coaches and will regenerate our team every 5, 10, 15 years from all over Europe.

IGPN: How important is that mixing of coaches and the ideas they can share?

KS: I think it’s a great thing and I’m sure it’s the same in other sports and in life – I think the more you can seek and find by way of knowledge, practical skills, etc. the better. They say seeing is believing and I’m sure that’s what the group that have been here at the University have found out. I would think that they’ll all leave here richer for this experience, and happier for the experience.

IGPN: How important is your passing of knowledge on to the next generation of coaches at an event like the European TCC?

BG: It’s a good idea for me to share the knowledge that I’ve gathered over the last however many years, and I’m quite happy to learn myself. I think I’ll be able to tell the delegates here what I think is the important part about coaching, which I’ve seen practiced which I’ve done.

IGPN: How important is this interaction between coaches so that they share knowledge, especially from across various parts of the world.

BG: I think that’s the big improvement in golf today - the standardisation of coaching. When I started we didn’t really have any standards as such. I think that the PGA instruction manual is very comprehensive and really it’s got everything you want in there. Gone are the days when professionals taught different methods and different ideas and I think it’s very standardised now and that’s really the key, that’s why we’re seeing so many good players. Amateurs when they turn pro are ready for the pro circuit right away, they don’t need to go through a probationary period where they’ve got to learn the ‘pro-method’…they’re ready right away. It’s really quite impressive to be honest.
