Registering with the police
One of the formalities you might have to deal with in your first 7 days of arriving in London is to register with the police. This applies only if the visa inside your passport says ‘Police registration within 7 days of arrival’. If you have a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) please check the back of your card to see if it applies to you.
There are two ways to register with the police. You can either go and register on your own or register with the University batch scheme.
How to register if you go alone The documents you need to take are:
— Completed OVRO Registration Proforma: You can print this form from the OVRO website
http://content.met.police.uk/ Site/overseasvisitorsrecordsoffice.
— Passport and Visa, Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) if applicable.
— Two colour passport sized photographs (these must be cut to size and stapled to the completed proforma before your visit).
— A copy of the identity page from your passport.
— A copy of the visa page from your passport or a copy of your biometric card (both sides) if applicable.
— Registration fee of £34. You can pay by cash, sterling travellers’ cheque or most debit or credit cards (no Euros, American Express or cheques accepted).
— Your Police Registration Certificate (PRC) if you already have one.
Students previously registered with police outside London
If you initially registered with another police force and have moved into the London area, you will need to attend OVRO within 7 days of moving. You will need to bring all the documents mentioned in the ‘How to register if you go alone’ section including the registration proforma and two passport sized colour photographs when you attend.
Reporting to police
It is a criminal offence if you breach the conditions attached to your leave. If you do not register with the police, you could be fined or have problems with future visa applications.
