Safety at home
— Lock all windows and doors. — Leave keys in a safe place and know the location of fire exits.
— Make sure your television, music equipment and other valuables cannot be seen through your window and do not leave credit cards or cash lying around the house.
— If you go on holiday try and leave your valuable belongings with a friend or in secure storage and always tell someone where you are going and when you will be coming back.
Safety on the streets
— When you first move in to your accommodation, try to find routes that are busy and well lit. Always walk on the pavement, facing oncoming traffic.
— If you are returning home late at night, walk with other people or use public transport. Do not take shortcuts through dark alleyways/parks.
— If you feel you are being followed, cross the street and find a public area as quickly as possible.
— Be aware of others when you are retrieving money from the bank machine.
Private accommodation
— Ensure that you go through a recognised estate agent to find a property.
— Always take someone with you to view the property.
Laws in the UK
— It is illegal to carry drugs or any sort of weapon on your person.
— Never buy goods that you think might be stolen as you might be held responsible.
