The Log • Aug. 29 - Sept. 11, 2014 • 7 Sea turtle sighting in Santa Monica Bay is a rare event

LOS ANGELES – The Ocean Conservation Society research team had a rare encounter with an endan- gered green sea turtle in August, as the reptile was spotted swimming a couple of miles off the Los Angeles coastline. The event marked the first instance in which a green sea turtle was spotted in Santa Monica Bay. The last sighting occurred approximately 16 years ago, according to the society. Green sea tur- tles can weigh more than 300 pounds and grow up to 5 feet in length. “We haven’t had any more sightings

but we wouldn’t be surprised to have more sightings in the near future,” said Maddalena Bearzi, president of the Ocean Conservation Society. Sea turtles have been regularly seen

A welcomed addition

Oasis Sailing Club adds new boat to its fleet.

NEWPORT BEACH — A new Catalina 34 slowly sailed into the Balboa Yacht Basin to great fanfare, Aug. 8 as mem- bers of the Oasis Sailing Club wel- comed the newest member of the club’s three-member fleet. Oasis VI, a Catalina 34 MKII was

recently purchased by the club to help to increase recreational sailing for its 140 club members. “This is definitely an upgrade for

us,” said Chris Bassett, club member and outreach program chair. “It will be used for recreational sailing for sen- iors at our club to get out on the sea.” Although the boat is 9 years old, it’s been kept in top notch condition in Los Alamitos. “It’s basically brand new,” Bassett said. Oasis Sailing Club is one of the

organizations within Friends of Oasis, a non-profit organization that sup- ports the Oasis Senior Center in

Corona del Mar. Through the center, the club provides sailing opportunities to all seniors in the community for a nominal fee. “This is an amazing organization of active seniors that love sailing and loves to be out on the sea,” Bassett said.

The new vessel will be christened later this month; however, members are already signing up for sail days on Oasis VI. Members and their guests

can sign up to sail on full- or half-day sails seven days a week. Currently there are three boats in

the club’s fleet but one – Oasis IV – will be sold later this year. Oasis VI was purchased using membership dues and monthly dues. The proceeds from the sale of Oasis IV, a 32 foot boat, will help to pay for the new-boat, Bassett explained. For more information on Oasis

A colony of these marine rep- tiles has found its home in an area between two industrial power plants, thanks to the unusually warm temperature of the water, according to the society. The rare sea turtle sighting is likely due to the warm ocean temperature recorded in these last weeks. The warm

Four rescued from burning boat off Malibu

MALIBU (AP) — Authorities say four people have been rescued from a burning boat off Malibu. Coast Guard spokesman Lt.

Michael Turanitza said someone aboard the 40-foot boat Dukella made a mayday call shortly before 7 p.m. Aug. 16 after the vessel caught fire about two miles south of Paradise Cove. Turanitza said a joint rescue involving the Coast Guard and Los Angeles County lifeguards was launched, but another boat, the research vessel Pacific Star, that was about a half mile from the burning boat, got to the scene first. The three adults and one child were pulled from a life raft onto the boat. No injuries were reported. Turanitza said Dukella, which

was en route from Ventura to Marina del Rey, was fully engulfed in flames and sank in 200 feet of water.
