Aug.29-Sept. 1 • Festival of Sail, San Diego. The 2014 Festival of Sail, hosted by the Maritime Museum of San Diego, will transform the North Embarcadero into a nautical theme park. More than 20 tall ships and other vessels from around the world will visit San Diego. The festival kicks off with a parade of tall ships on San Diego Bay, Thursday, Aug. 28. Parade begins at 11 a.m. and can be seen from the Embarcadero, Harbor Island, Shelter Island and Coronado. Festival visitors will enjoy touring the ships, marvelous food and drink from dozens of restaurant booths, a petting zoo, pirates, cannon battles on the bay, sunset cruises and shop for one of-a- kind items among more than 150 fes- tival vendors. Tickets are for sale now on the Maritime Museum’s website at sdmaritime.org.


Sept. 6 • The Catalina DC-3 Barbecue, Avalon. The Catalina DC-3 Barbecues are back. Register in advance for this last barbecue of the summer. Advance reservations are required. Call (310) 510-2196.

Sept. 14 • Exploring Santa Rosa Island with the Catalina Island Conservancy, Catalina. Join the Catalina Island Conservancy to explore California’s second largest Channel Island, Santa Rosa. At over 93 square miles in size, Santa Rosa is filled with rolling hills, deep canyons and wide beaches. The island’s relatively low profile is broken by a high, central mountain range, rising 1,589 feet at its highest point. Learn more about the island with Conservancy biologists and staff. Sept. 17-21• Los Caballeros Catalina Trek, Catalina. Members of Los Caballeros, all accomplished horsemen of the Conservancy’s Catalina Caballeros, enjoy their 65th Annual Catalina Trek.


Sept. 24-28• Catalina Film Festival, Catalina. This annual competitive fes- tival includes awards in up to 10 cate- gories, including the Isla Earth Award, recognizing an outstanding environ- mental documentary, presented by the Catalina Island Conservancy.


Sept. 28 • 2014 Marine Mammal Gala, Laguna Beach. The Pacific Marine Mammal Center will host the annual gala from 5:30-9:30 p.m. at its center in an effort to raise funding for the organization. Oct. 26 • The Wild Side Art Show and Sale, Newport Beach. A passion for Catalina Island and plein air art come together to create an extraordinary


afternoon. The show features 10 nationally acclaimed plein air artists, who will display their interpretations of Catalina’s rugged wildlands and scenic beauty. Proceeds from the sale of these paintings support the growth of a permanent collection of plein air artwork that documents the Island’s wild side and the Catalina Island Conservancy’s restoration efforts. Aug. 15-Oct. 29 • Boat Piloting, Long Beach. The U.S. Power Squadron pres- ents the class from 7-9 p.m., every Wednesday at Shoreline Yacht Club. Lobster Festival Returns to Long Beach, Sept. 5-7
