NEWPORT BEACH — More than 20 city of Newport Beach officials and community members took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to show their support for previous Newport Beach Citizen of the Year and former Harbor Commissioner Ralph Rodheim during a special event held Aug. 20 at the Newport Beach Athletic Club.
Lifting their buckets of ice water,
the group dropped the water over their heads at the count of three. Rodheim, who was front and center, was drenched within seconds. “It’s like being in a fraternity that
you didn’t want to join,” said Rodheim, who was diagnosed with ALS three months ago. “But you’re in that fraternity so what do you do?” Staying active both physically and in his community is what Rodheim plans to continue to do. The sailor and avid boater has continued to race in the bay with Harbor Commissioner Joe Stapleton who took the ALS challenge with other supporters. Former Mayor Steve Rosansky, Councilmembers Nancy Gardner and Mike Henn were only a few who took the chilling challenge. Rodheim, who served on the
Harbor Commission for 11 years and organized the 2014 Wooden Boat
Festival, is a well-known name around Newport Beach. It was no surprise to see the large number of supporters dressed in bathing suits, board shorts and swim trunks volun- tarily drenching themselves with cold water in support of the gregari- ous Newport Beach resident. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, according to the ALS Association. At press time, $31.5 million in donations had been made to the ALS Association due to the widespread challenge. Rodheim said the Aug. 20 Ice
Bucket Challenge hosted by the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce was held to help raise ALS awareness. “This isn’t about me,” he said.
“This is about bringing awareness and finding a cure for this terrible, terrible disease.” To make a contribution to the ALS Association, send donations to the ALS Association—Orange County Chapter, 1232 Village Way, Suite A, Santa Ana, CA, 92705 and reference Ralph Rodheim.
