Fish Report From page 31

was caught by Isiah Taylor, Oceanside, while fishing off the pier in Boulder Bay. There was a photo taken, but then the fish was released, and everyone who has seen the photo says it was probably bigger than the lake record 22.8- pound cat. Trout fishing has been good, especially for trollers working 2 1/2 colors of lead core and Needlefish or Rapala Husky Jerks. Derek and Taylor Clark, Newport Beach, had limits of pan-sized rainbows fishing with guide Curt Dills, Fish Big Bear Charter. Shore fishing has been tougher with only a few fish showing on a slowly sinking float rig and PowerBait. Bass fishing remains fair with the bass are holding in deeper water and coming up for buzz and crankbaits early and late in the day and drop-shotted baits after the surface action. Panfish and catfish slow. For more fishing information: Big Bear Sporting Goods (909) 866-3222.

GREGORY LAKE: DFW trout plant three weeks ago with both rainbows and browns in the plants. The trout have been slow with only a few showing, but a few catfish and small crappie are being caught. There is a $4 per day fish- ing access fee for the whole lake. The Crestline Chamber of Commerce is having trout derbies the second Saturday of each month with a $1,000 tagged fish the top prize. That prize rolls over and a portion added to the next derby if the tagged fish isn’t caught. Derby entry fee is $20 per person and includes the $4 lake fishing fee. Lake, derby, and fishing information at (909) 338-2233.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE: The trout bite has been spotty, but a few nice fish have been landed. A plant this week from Jess Ranch should turn the bite on again. Patrick Rice, Orange, had a 2-9 rainbow on PowerBait in red, while and blue. Every angler who brings in from 15 to a full limit of 25 crappie will receive a raffle ticket for an Aug. 30 draw- ing for a $100 Bass Pro gift card. Information: 909-867- 2009 and the website, with an in-depth fishing report, is gvlfishing.com.

JENKS LAKE REGION: DFW trout plant three weeks ago at Jenks Lake. The Santa Ana River and the South Fork were planted with DFW trout last week and are on the schedule again for next week. General Information: Mill Creek Ranger Station at (909) 382-2881.

HIGH DESERT LAKES

HESPERIA LAKE: The catfish bite has been good with 1,000-pound plants Aug. 14 and another slated for Thursday this week. The average size is around four pounds. Best action has been on garlic shrimp, night- crawlers, marshmallow-meal worm combo, chicken liver, and cut mackerel. Top fish was a 10-8 cat landed by Les

Brown, Appley Valley on chicken liver with garlic scent. There were 10-pounders landed by Neltie Houston, Hesperia, and Luis Herrera, Victorville, while Rick Moulton, Rancho Cucamonga, caught a nine-pound cat. Information: (800) 521-6332 or (760) 244-5951.

JESS RANCH LAKES: Trout remain slow, which is typical during the heat of summer. The best bite is early morning on the usual array of PowerBaits, nightcrawlers, or small trout jigs and lures. The bass action is fair on plastics and topwater early in the day, while the catfish and bluegill bites are pretty good. The catfish are best on cut baits, while the ‘gills are showing on meal worms, wax worms, crickets, or small jigs tipped with bait. Trout plants are each week. RIVERSIDE COUNTY

DIAMOND VALLEY: The largemouth bass bite has been fair with some flurries of good topwater action early and late in the day. Most of the fish are two to four pounds and showing in 25 to 35 feet of water on drop-shot plas- tics in purple, brown, or pink. Senkos and Creature Baits are also good bets. The striper bite has been very tough this past week with only a few fish showing on bluegill- like swimbaits on top or trolled flies. Catfish are fair to good but getting little fishing pressure. Cut baits off the mail lake points and mouths of the bays and coves have been the best bet. Most are quality fish from 4 to 6 pounds with some bigger. The bluegill and redear action

is fair to good with the bite best on smaller fish on crick- ets, wax worms, meal worms, red worms, and night- crawlers. A few one-pound class fish. Boats inspected and tagged “quagga free” at Diamond Valley are also allowed on Perris and Silverwood. For general lake and launch information, call (800) 590-LAKE. For fishing and boat rental info call the marina at (951) 926-7201 or dvmarina.com or Last Chance Bait and Tackle at (951) 658- 7410 or lastchancetackle.com.

PERRIS: The largemouth bass action was good this past week with fish showing all over the lake, mostly chasing shad that are running along the shorelines. The topwater bite has been good in the mornings, and plastics and reaction baits the best in the evenings. The mid-day bite is pretty tough, however, with the fish sounding down into 20 to 30 feet of water. The bluegill and redear action remains fair in the east end, around the marina docks, and at the tire reef. The best bite has been on red worms, meal worms, nightcrawlers, and crickets, but the weed beds are getting thick and hampering fishing. A few catfish have been reported around the tire reef on mackerel and fresh bonito, but the crappie and trout have been no-shows this past week. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged Silverwood or Diamond Valley will also be allowed at Perris. Information: marina (951) 657-2179, state park (951) 940-5600.

SKINNER: The striper bite is fair to good on two to five pound class fish, but few bigger fish this past week. The fish are showing off Ramp No. 2 and at the dam, but the inlet has been the hot spot on lug worms, sardines and chicken liver in about 40 feet of water. Heidi Sullivan, Riverside, landed a 7-11 striper on a nightcrawler near the dam. The catfish bite is good with quite a few fish topping five pounds. Best action on shrimp, chicken liver, mackerel, and sardines fished in Catfish Alley around rocks and tules. Erik Kear, Temecula, had an 11-pound cat on chicken liver off the south shore. There will also be a catfish plant Aug. 29. Bluegill and redear are slow, but an occasional quality fish continues to pop. The largemouth bite also remains fair on nightcrawlers, plastics, and reaction baits, and there has been some topwater action. Carp are very good on dough baits, and most are in less than 10 feet of water. Information: store (951) 926-1505 or marina (951) 926-8515.

ELSINORE: The catfish bite remains very good with most fish running from two to eight pounds. Cut baits working the best. The carp bite is fair to good on dough baits or corn. The bite on bass, crappie, and bluegill, is slow and there have been no wiper reports.
