Innovation is key at Crystal Cabin Awards CRYSTAL CABIN AWARDS 2014
The Eighth Crystal Cabin Awards Ceremony took place in the magnificent ballroom of the Hotel Atlantic Kempinski on Tuesday 8 April. President of the Awards Association,
Dr Franz Josef Kirschfink, thanked the 24 judges, all prominent industry figures, and emphasised how important innovation will be in the future, when he predicts, planes are likely to be refitted every six to seven years. The three shortlisted candidates for each of the seven awards were initially selected from 54 entries, representing 12 countries. The shortlisted candidates were personally interviewed by the judges. The first award, for the Greener Cabin,
went to Diehl Aerospace, and its Modular Autonomous Galley with Integrated power Cell (MAGIC) galleys, which could also have taken the award for Most Contrived Acronym! The award for Industrial

went to Schott AG and its sidewall window panes. These are made from laminated special glass composite and are superior to traditional plastic-based panes,
preparing the way for larger partitions. The Passenger Comfort Hardware award
went, not surprisingly, to a seat. The ZIM Flugsitz EC-00 seat is a revolutionary design developed for single aisle aircraft to make extra space without compromising comfort. The award for Passenger Comfort Systems
went to Lufthansa Technik's acWAP, which is the first WAP with integrated antennas in its own housing. It delivers high-speed wifi for inflight internet, video streaming, real-time communications, POS services, and other

web-based applications. The ac standard is four times faster than the previous 'n standard', and being ARINC compliant it is an easy upgrade for existing systems. Ian Harbison of Aircraft Cabin
Management presented the Premium Class and VIP award to Paperclip Design for their Caterpillar convertible seating for long haul. The idea is to enable the airline to make best use of the space by adapting it to demand for either Premium Economy or Business class. The final award of the night, for a
University project, went to Delft Tech University and Zodiac Aerospace's Sense the Transitions. Developed by Peeters, Shah, and van Meeuwen, this certainly fitted the award brief for innovation. It engages passengers with the terrain over which they are travelling by providing multisensory geo-tainment and projecting pre-curated footage on the seatback.
