pirent Communications, the leader in testing wireless networks, devices and services, today launched Quantum, an automated system for measuring and driving improvements to the battery life of mobile devices. Quantum is the industry’s first user experience analytics system to automatically execute consumer use cases on a mobile device while performing synchronized power consumption measurements.
S VoLTE,
The adoption of 4G applications such as video chat,
streaming video,
multiplayer gaming and more comes at a cost – bigger screens, faster application processors and higher throughput modems are driving mobile device power consumption way up. In response, device makers have moved to higher capacity batteries, in many cases accommodated by larger device sizes. However, the trend toward larger batteries is peaking as space, heat and cost limitations come into play. As a result, the mobile industry is shifting its attention to the power efficiency of mobile devices and chipsets.
“Our studies show that mobile devices with the best power efficiency outperform the worst by 50 to 70 percent depending on the use case, which is why we see a real opportunity for device makers and chipset providers to improve power efficiency and create a better overall mobile user experience,” said Des Owens, General Manager, Service Experience at Spirent Communications. “With Quantum, mobile operators, device makers and chipset providers can make true apples-to-apples comparisons of power consumption across devices and chipsets. Quantum’s use-case-based approach enables device and component makers to understand the real- world battery life of new products, identify component and design weaknesses and make improvements to power efficiency.”

dvanced Power Electronics has recently launched new cost-effective N-channel enhancement-mode power MOSFETs offering a fast switching performance and very low on-resistance. The AP99T03GS-HF-3 MOSFET comes in a TO-263
package, which is widely used for commercial and industrial surface-mount applications. Devices are well- suited for low voltage applications such as DC/DC converters, and are also available as the AP99T03GP- HF-3 in a TO-220 through-hole package which is ideal for applications where a small PCB footprint or an attached heatsink is required.
Both new MOSFETs benefit from simple drive requirements and offer a fast switching performance, very low on-resistance of only 2.5mΩ, a drain-source breakdown voltage of 30V, and a continuous drain current of 120A. The components are halogen-free and fully RoHS-compliant.

The Latest HyperGrip® Connector Series
D
arwin, the leading hi-rel connector and SMT board hardware manufacturer, has announced the launch of a new range of PCB-mounted, dual- entry test sockets that accept a 2mm pin. These low profile devices measure only 5.16mm max above the board when mounted, and feature gold-plated contacts to ensure excellent electrical performance. The dual entry sockets facilitate easy access. Devices feature a flat upper surface to enable automated pick and place assembly. Both SMT and PTH devices are available: surface mount versions are supplied on tape and reel packaging for automated production or loose for prototyping; through hole styles are available in three different colours to facilitate to colour-coding of functions. Devices are rated at 5A, 1500V. They have a contact resistance of 5mΩ (max), and an operating temperature of -40C to +105degC.

riven by customer demand, Smiths Connectors has expanded its robust and innovative Hypertac HyperGrip® product line for medical and other high reliability applications. HyperGrip now offers more configurations, including connectors with 5 (HG0), 19 (HG3), 33 (HG4), or 80 (HG6) pin positions to complement the growing 12-pin position connector (HG2). Also available, is a shielded version for the HG2, HG3,
and HG4 size options for EMI/RFI
protection as well as Spring Probe, Fibre Optic (expanded beam and butt joint) and Coaxial contacts. Designed specifically for the medical industry, the HyperGrip® offers a wide range of benefits for design engineers,
including user-
configurability, an aesthetic design with push-pull latching for easy one-hand mating, and sealing and shielding options. Sealed connectors deliver up to IP67 protection when mated and EMI/RFI shielding protects against signal interference in electrically noisy environments, allowing for the highest degree of safety and reliability within applications.
