longside hurricane gale force winds and torrential rain, Southern Manufacturing
& Electronics 2014 held in February in Farnborough continued against the elements. The success of the show has rapidly grown over the years despite some very unrelenting weather conditions and this year certainly proved eventful with rain and wind so strong, it threatened to take the very roof off! But as the rafters bowed and creaked
battered by the howling wind a decidedly buzzing atmosphere was taking place as visitors and exhibitors alike, thronged in to talk shop. One such exhibiter was Noritake Itron
who was demonstrating its custom designed metallised touch switches. The company points out that with these switches, customers can create personal and unique patterns on them with a high- gloss metallic finish which is hard wearing and rather aptly, resilient to the elements. To create this, the use of a photo
lithographic etching process is used, which results in a precise pattern as small as 10um in width on the reverse side of the glass. The metallisation is able to prevent non-illuminated areas from light bleed or viewing angle deviation as seen in plastic technologies. The company advises it can supply touch
panels and complete module solutions with evaluation products. Glass panel thickness ranges from 0.7mm to 4mm and up to 15inch screen diagonal with reverse bonded flexi-circuit termination. Also at the show, Amphenol highlighted its latest ranges of connectors including

products that meet EMC/EMP protection and RoHS Compliance. Last year the company launched its
Industrial@amphenol website, which is a comprehensive website combing the interconnection solutions and technologies of Amphenol’s focused industrial businesses. At Southern this year the company
presented a selection of connector accessories including environmentally sealed & EMC screened backshells and cable strain relief adaptors. For sealing and EMC protection were various metal, plastic and rubber protective caps.
NEW JOINT VENTURE Also braving the elements was Mouser Electronics. The distributor announced it is now distributing products from KEMET’s joint venture partner NEC TOKIN. This range includes Supercapacitors, High-Current Power Inductors, AC Line Filters, Relays, Flex Suppressors and ESD/EMI cores. In addition to this, the
design tools, including its DesignSpark PCB Version 6.0, the latest release of the company’s professional software for schematic capture and PCB layout, and DesignSpark Mechanical, a new 3-D solid modelling and assembly tool that is freely available to all. The distributer also presented the latest Raspberry Pi offerings. In addition, RS demonstrated its RS Toolbox, described as a handy reference mobile app for iOS devices. But just as streams of rain started to accumulate down the aisles running past the Binder stand, one solution which so aptly was being exhibited by the company was its waterproof NCC IP67- Connector range. devices are IP67 male panel mount connectors that can achieve shield connection even if not mated due to an innovative locking mechanism. Their special design allows the panel mount part to be covered by a spring mounted lid and this lid protects the contact area against the elements. As the contact elements are touch proof they are also protected against movement. These devices are specifically designed for applications requiring a water tight solution. Following a somewhat wet and wild extravaganza with weather that was rather concerning for any non watertight equipment, after all electronics and water go together like cat fur and glue, but one thing that stuck in my mind was that despite the
weather the show went on and another successful year was had.
