In honor of the Chinese New Year Festival, this January and February, Chinese artist Jia Lu has graciously accepted an offer to exhibit her paintings at the Exclusive Collections Gallery in The Forum Shops at Caesars in Las Vegas. Jia Lu was born to an artistic family in Beijing in 1954, the daughter of Chinese oil painter Lu Enyi. She studied under master ink painter Fan Zeng at the China Central Academy of Art and Design and continued her education at the Toronto School of Art and York University in Canada. Her career took many paths. In 1969, Lu joined the Chinese Navy, where she worked as an operating nurse and played on the Navy basketball team. She has a creative nature, and in addition to her work as a designer and design consultant, she has a passion for acting and directing. Painting, however, remains her priority and she has built an impressive career, participating in more than 200 solo and group shows. In fact, Lu was named one of the 50 most influential people in China by Global Times in 2011, joining the ranks of Jackie Chan, professional athlete Yao Ming, and pianist Lang Lang. Lu’s figurative works resonate with audiences for her use of Realism in a surrealistic setting. Lu derives much of her visual imagery from her experience in theater and film, and applying bright color and a pronounced light source, she creates a scene infused with the drama of the stage. Looking to “assimilate tradition into a contemporary sensibility,” Lu’s paintings unite her Asian and American cultural influences, as well as her Buddhist and Christian ones, focusing on the growing notion of globalization and living as a citizen of the world.
