Our Survey Says


THE DECISION to write a monthly column for BikeBiz was borne out of two key factors. Firstly, I was aware that at Cyclescheme we have access to a wealth of important and insightful data, which I wanted to share; and secondly, I saw it as a way of interacting with the independent bike trade on a scale I simply haven’t been able to do before. It’s great to see that, as we come to the end of 2013, the cycle to work market as a whole is growing. In addition, Cyclescheme’s share of this market is continuing to rise. Suffice to say, the cycle to work scheme is in rude health. This success has been attributed to many factors.

Tragically, six cyclists died on London’s roads within 14 days last month, leading to heated calls for improved measures to boost cyclist safety in the capital.


Team GB’s success at the Olympics last year, for example, has been one of the key ingredients in the rise in the popularity of cycling. Further to this, I think I can safely say that another big part of this success has been the work we have all been doing in the bike trade. In the case of Cyclescheme, our annual surveys (which


are due to go out to over 450,000 people nationwide very soon) are one of the most crucial ways in which we learn about our market. This will be the third year we will have conducted surveys on this scale and we strongly believe that learning from our suppliers, clients and the wider bike trade helps us and our partners stay ahead of the game.


Because of the data we have accumulated we know that over 60 per cent of people hear about Cyclescheme through a work colleague, that nearly 70 per cent are attracted to join by the savings and that over 70 per cent would not have bought their bike had it not been offered through the Cycle to Work scheme. We also know that one in four adult bikes sold in the UK are sold through a Cycle to Work scheme. Aside from feedback from consumers, we also need to
