Eggs on Ice Antarctica is a tough place for baby penguins to live. A mother penguin travels inland to lay her egg. T ere, the chicks will be safe from predators. Yet they face other dangers. T ere’s nothing to eat. T ere’s nothing to build a nest with. A mother penguin lays her egg

on her feet. T en she gently pushes the egg onto her mate’s feet. T e egg must not touch the ice. If it does, the chick inside will freeze. T en the mother goes back to the

sea to fi nd food. T e father waits. To keep the egg safe, he barely moves until the mother comes back.

The Smallest Penguin A father penguin keeps his chick warm.

Not all penguins are big. Meet the fairy penguin. It’s also called a little blue penguin. This penguin is small enough to fi t in your hands. Unlike other penguins, fairies often fl ock together at sea. This helps keep these small birds safe from big predators.
