To the Moon? Aſter the rockets and the crew are ready to go, it’s time for the next step. Some people think that next step is to set up a moon base. Tere, astronauts could learn how to live on Mars. Others disagree. Tey say the

moon is different from Mars. For example, the moon doesn’t have an atmosphere. Mars does. Atmosphere is a layer of gases that surround some objects in space. An atmosphere changes how a rocket lands and takes off. So the moon might not be a good place to practice those skills.

One-Way Mission? Some scientists think the next step is to go to Mars. Tey think crews should make a short visit to Mars, then go back to Earth. Others think a Mars trip should be

one-way. Tey believe a Mars colony could be set up within 10 years.

WORDWISE

atmosphere: the layer of gases that form around an object in space, like a planet

engineer: a person who uses scientific knowledge and rules for practical purposes

invent: to make an original device, system, or process

16 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER

orbit: the path of a planet, moon, or manmade satellite

technology: the use of scientific knowledge in industry

Surviving on Mars To live on Mars, people will need water, air, and food. Luckily, Mars has some resources. It has ice. Te ice could be taken from the ground for drinking and washing. Oxygen in the water could make air to breathe. Astronauts could grow food in greenhouses. Here’s another possibility, too.

3-D printers could be used to make meals! Tis technology already exists for some foods. Astronauts could print a full meal in minutes.

Decisions, Decisions Learning more about Mars and space travel is very important. It will help astronauts and engineers make decisions. By working together, humans may

one day reach Mars. Ten the people of Earth can call the Red Planet home, too.
