COLOR helps a penguin hide in the water. Its white belly blends in with the bright surface. Its black back blends in with the dark sea.
WINGS are small, stiff, and fl at. They act like fl ippers as a penguin swims. They also help a penguin balance as it walks.
Odd Bird Bodies A penguin’s body is built to swim. Its head and toes are narrow. Its middle is rounded. Water flows up and over a penguin’s body. T e water doesn’t slow the bird down. A penguin’s wings are like flippers.
T ey pull the bird through the water. Its stubby legs act like a rudder. T ey steer the bird. A penguin’s bones are solid and
heavy. T e bird uses this extra weight to dive deep. All penguins have feathers and
swim like fish. Yet all penguins are not alike. Where they live can make a diff erence in how they are.
Feathers keep this penguin warm in a cold environment..
