Reaping the rewards of cooperative membership

BY JULIANN GRAHAM, CCC, Communications Coordinator

As a member of Tri-County Electric Cooperative you are an owner of the organization – with a vested interest in the cooperative. This means when the cooperative has margins those are allocated to the members based on their purchases. The cooperative uses this allocated margin as equity for a time then returns it to members as a patronage capital retirement at a future date.

Here at Tri-County Electric Cooperative we work hard to deliver safe, affordable, and reliable electricity to our 12,500 members every day. But we don’t stop there. Because we’re a cooperative, we strive to do much more, to find ways of providing real value to you and the communities we serve.

So what exactly does real value mean? Well, in some ways it’s basic, like connecting with a real, local person when you call our office, rather than just a recording. It could be finding a copy of Oklahoma Living in your mailbox or inbox every month, which keeps you informed about co-op business and happenings in Oklahoma. Value is also getting the lights back on more quickly after a storm, thanks to mutual-aid agreements that bring line crews in from other co-ops to help us restore power.

2013 Patronage Capital Retirement For 2013, the Board of Trustees of Tri-County Electric Cooperative approved to refund patronage capital for the years 1993 through 2001. Members of the cooperative during those years who received electric service, will receive a patronage check.

Thanks to the financial position of the cooperative, more than $5.1 million in disbursed operating margins is being retired to members this year.
