Recipes to Live By

R J

ane Harris contacted me recently to ask if I might like to share some good, ancestral recipes with OEC's membership. But, of course! And

lucky for me she sent some of my favorites. (How did she know? I bet she's been reading.) Mrs. Harris is with the Cleveland County

Genealogical Society (CCGS). In 2010, CCGS published the Heritage Cookbook: Favorite Family Recipes from Past Generations in celebration of the society's 30th anniversary. Te sample recipes she shared come at just the right time with crisp autumn weather and Tanksgiving just around the corner. I am ready to get out the baking dishes and stew pots and get to cooking. [Note: I always have very good intentions, but intentions alone do not constitute a meal.] I chose the Trusty Pie Crust recipe from Nova

Hornback's mother, Hattie. While store-bought, roll-out pie dough makes a pretty good crust—it is definitely more convenient—there is nothing like the taste of a homemade crust. Besides, during the holidays, I like to do things in a traditional fashion—meaning from scratch. [Note: Refer back to the note in the previous paragraph. Store-bought pie crust is better than arriving to family dinner with nothing to share.] I love pie. I love pie so much I served it at my

wedding in September, instead of cake. I grew up with my grandma baking and although her favorite thing to bake is cookies, I love it when she bakes pie (unless it is pecan, which I really do not care for). My favorite childhood pictures are those in which I am covered head to toe in flour and rolling out dough. So, while I am partial to my grandma's pie crust, I am going to try Hattie's this Tanksgiving. (A tablespoon of vinegar?)

ecipes . . . to live by by Tory Tedder CCGS is celebrating the 23rd anniversary of

the founding of the Genealogy Library, Sunday, Oct. 20. Festivities commence with a library open house held between 2-4 p.m. at 1119 E. Main in Norman. I am looking forward to visiting and hope to meet Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Hornback in person. I intend to pick up my own Heritage Cookbook, as well. Come to the CCGS library and help them celebrate the history of Cleveland County. Other CCGS events in October include

"Tuesdays at the Library" held Oct. 8, 15, and 22 from 12:15-1 p.m. Discussions are led by Mary Lewis with short topics about the library and genealogy research. You can contact CCGS for more information by calling 701-2100 or drop by the library any Tuesday, Tursday, or Saturday afternoon from 1-5 p.m. As always, you can share your favorite recipes with us by mailing them to:

Recipes to Live By PO Box 1208 Norman OK 73070-1208

or e-mail them to OECNews@okcoop.org and type "Recipes to Live By" in the subject line.

I want to express a special thank you to Mary

V. (Tedder) Johnson who sent me a lovely letter wishing me well on my wedding day and, knowing I love aprons, she sent me a couple she made along with some crochet. We thought maybe we could be related, but

alas, I could not find any records. Mrs. Johnson, thank you so much! I will wear these apron with love in my heart.
