U

pon first glance, Evan Allard appears to be your typical 24-year-old. He was born and raised in Vinita, Okla. He currently works as a jour- neyman sub maintenance technician at KAMO Power in Vinita and is a member of Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative. What you wouldn’t know by looking at him is that he was named the 2010 World Champion Bullfighter and currently raises his own herd of Spanish fighting bulls. “It started as a childhood dream and then it turned into reality,” Evan said. “All I ever wanted to do was be a rodeo clown and fight bulls and I grew up to be a world champion bullfighter.” This childhood dream was evident from the very beginning, and his mother confirms it with a story and a laugh.

“As a small child, Evan would dress as a bullfighter with his baggies and makeup every year at Halloween,” Michelle Allard said. “He began to dream of this lifestyle at a very early age.” When Evan told her what he wanted to be when he grew up, Michelle was a little anxious. She immediately gave him a set of ground rules; the first being that he had to pursue further education of some sort and the second that he would not be allowed in front of another bull until he had professional training. “I asked him if he understood these two rules and he reluctantly said yes,” Michelle said. “Then I told him that if he could promise me these two things, I would support him 100 percent in this endeavor.”

At the age of 16, Evan made good on the first of his promises and began his career as a bullfighter with professional training.

“When I started, I went to a bullfight school and I’ve been going to rodeos and getting to know people since then,” Evan said. “I started at the bottom working junior rodeos and throughout the years I got better and started getting into bigger and better rodeos until I made it to the professional rodeo circuit.” The first time he entered a professional arena in 2007, Evan remembers getting hooked by the bull the entire time he was in the ring.

“The bull really worked me over, but I was fortunate enough that it didn’t scare
