THE ARRIVAL by Shaun Tan (Hodder Children's Books, £14.99)
I ran out of adjectives for
The Arrival. Diverse,
heart-wrenching, thought-provoking, honest, funny – all of these apply, as does the intriguing fact it contains no text other than the title on the cover. A picture book, but not necessarily a child’s book, it tells a simple story in a beautiful way. Every page is lavishly hand-drawn, and the characters are sensitive and highly emotional beings. An emigrant travels
to a foreign land, where he neither understands the language spoken, written words, food eaten, nor the customs of the inhabitants. Days pass, as our arrival learns about his surroundings. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Tan's slim volume is a masterpiece of epic proportions. Angela Garry, PA Trainer, Pica Aurum
NOVA by Anton Bearsley (Self-published, £7.99)
Over the Christmas
break I revisited a genre of books that
I hadn’t dipped into since my teenage years: science fi ction. Nova is the debut novel of Anton Bearsley, and follows the adventures of Heraan, a farmer, and Jergaan, a warrior, who come from a deeply hierarchical society. When their homeland is invaded by a ruthless, more advanced race, Jergaan becomes a
prisoner of war, and Heraan is captured by mercenaries. We move between the journeys of the two characters as each adapts to their new life. A short book, it races along at a great pace after the fi rst scene-setting chapters. If you are looking for a piece of escapism on a wet weekend, this is the book for you. to pass the time on my commute to work. The exaggerated examples of leaders using and abusing their PAs creates some laugh-out-loud moments, placed alongside the easy-to-follow steps that allow you to establish a more collaborative working relationship with your boss. My exec picked up on my
enthusiasm to try a different approach, and it obviously gave him food for thought. There have been positive changes since we read the book and it was a fantastic vehicle to improving the way we work together. Catharine Devereux, PA, The Co-Operative Banking Group
