DNV enters Korean LNG feasibility joint study
Ten-month assessment project to investigate LNG bunkering potential in south-eastern and western Korean ports
Group – has entered into a joint study with the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS), to assess the feasibility of LNG bunkering within South Korea. DNV will look at options for the construction of LNG bunkering terminals in the ports of Pusan, in the south-east, and Incheon and Pyeongtaek, in the west. In turn, KOGAS has formed two main

consortiums with Korean energy majors, to partake in the study; teaming up with Kyungnam Energy in the south-east and Samchully in the west. Te study will run
lass society DNV – which recently teamed up with Germanischer Lloyd (GL) to form the DNV GL
between February and November 2013. DNV aims to “define Korea’s commercial
opportunities related to LNG distribution and shipping, by addressing possible LNG supply chains and infrastructures, technologies related to LNG shipping and bunkering, standards, regulations and issues regarding public acceptance”. Prior to the current study, KOGAS formed an LNG bunkering consultative group, with an interest in constructing an LNG bunkering infrastructure and an LNG-fuelled vessel, and improving the gas supply to coastal and insular areas of the country. This KOGAS-led group includes: the Korea Gas
Safety Corporation; class societies DNV, Lloyd’s Register and the Korean Register; domestic shipbuilders Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries, DSME and STX Offshore & Shipbuilding; operator STX Pan Ocean; and various Korean energy companies. Te current project will be led by Dr Sun
Il Yoo, senior customer service manager, DNV Korea. Dr Yoo tells Offshore Marine Technology that, in his opinion, it may take until 2025 for LNG to become a popular option in South Korea, and that the country could well be handling 1 million tonnes of LNG by that date. OMT
