THE BEST YOU FEEL & LOOK GOOD

THE MYTH: If you go out with wet hair, you’ll get sick

Don't worry; this article isn't all about heart attacks that creep up on you without warning. On a lighter note, we get to be the ones to tell you that your mother wasn't always right. Remember when she told you and you would "catch your death" if you went out with wet hair? Well, she was wrong. In a study done at the Common Cold Research Unit in Salisbury, England, researchers inoculated a group of volunteers with a cold virus. They then got half of the volunteers to stand in a hallway for half an hour with dripping wet hair, while the other half stayed warm and cosy inside. The result? The people who stayed nice and warm were just as affected by the virus as their wet-haired equivalents, although the latter were far less comfortable, proving once and for all that mother doesn't always know best.

THE MYTH: Heart attacks hurt

If you, like most people, know what you know about heart attacks from film and television, then you probably think that when someone has a heart attack, they always clutch their chest or left arm in agony as they fall to the ground. However, according to the American Heart Association, between 40 and 60 per cent of heart attacks are painless, or as they are commonly called, silent. And the silent type are far more dangerous, because they don't get the medical attention that their arm-clutching counterparts get, so the sufferers aren't even aware that they have a heart problem. So, you might be thinking to yourself, if there are no symptoms, then what is the point of us making you all paranoid with this story? Luckily chest pain is only one symptom in a long list, including toothache or a "sense of doom for no apparent reason". So if you are feeling all doom and gloom and you have a toothache that your dentist can't seem to pinpoint, maybe your next stop should be your cardiologist.
