KEC Employee Reflects on 24 Years at KEC Job Well Done - Brenda McGuire

the project.

How many years have you been at KEC?

I started part-time in 1988 as an insurance clerk. In 1991, I went full-time and added receptionist duties to my job. So all together, I have been at KEC for 24 years.

What were some of your re- sponsibilities at KEC? As an insurance clerk I filled out forms and submitted medi- cal claims for the employees. Over the years, some respon- sibilities have become more obsolete and others have taken their place. We became more computerized. It was rare for me to use a typewriter as the years passed. I have had mail duties, accounting duties, an- swered light repairs (no, I have never climbed a pole). I en- joyed helping people, no matter

What is your most memo- rable moment at KEC? I will never forget being on the road to the airport with several employees on Sept. 11, 2001. As we neared the airport we began to hear news reports about the attacks on the Twin Towers. At first, no one knew exactly what was going on but as we drove within a few miles of the airport we begin to realize they were shutting- down airports. Therefore, we decided to drive to St. Louis for our training, but the classes were cancelled. Even though we were 1000’s of miles away from the terrorist attack they still played a role in our daily lives.

Also, I will never forget the 2002 Ice Storm. I stayed at work that night (all night) wrapped in a blanket with no neat and no lights. A few com- puters were running on the backup genera- tor. I answered phones and helped out

where needed. I hear the linemen talking of put- ting up poles just have them fall down again and how frustrating that was. Soon the parking lot

looked like a war zone. There were contractors and other co- operative trucks everywhere. What will you miss most about working at KEC? The people I work with and the members I have gotten to know. KEC has some of the best employees in the world. They will go the extra mile to help you out.

Do you mind sharing your retirement plans?

My plan for the near future is to spend more time with my grandchildren, children and parents. I also plan to volun- teer at my church and after that who knows? Life is an adven- ture and I cannot wait to see what GOD has in store for me.

Congratulations and Best Wishes,

From your KEC Family.
