Naomi Climer Global Head Media

Cloud Services, Sony Pictures Technologies Region: Global

Head in the cloud

Naomi Climer recently joined Sony Pictures in LA after eight years as Vice President of Sony Professional Europe.

Can you tell us more about your new role and remit? While I can’t go into detail yet, I've been asked to develop cloud services for the media industry, harnessing best practice from our games, movie and consumer electronics divisions to offer something unique and extraordinary to customers.

What technology challenges face Hollywood studios?

Much of the industry will stay focused on the continuing migration to digital, whether on the production side with 4k digital cameras and cloud-based workflows; the distribution side with exhibitors adopting digital cinema, or the consumer side with electronic sell through and over-the-top services.

Soon, we will be talking a lot more about 4k in the home, full 4k 3D in theatres, and the new business models that evolving technologies like UltraViolet and super-high speed data enable.

What are the wider implications of Cloud storage on content creation management and delivery?

Most of Sony PSE’s customers are talking about cloud and are very open to exploring the possibilities. They are under enormous pressure to reduce costs and cloud offers an opportunity to do this. Clearly, moving to the cloud does change the workflow - it brings incredible opportunities for global collaborative working, which will

seriously enrich the creative process. Customers are concerned about secu- rity and availability, but we are ready to address these issues.

How is Sony working to increase diversity within the industry? We've been influencing young people through activities such as Teen Tech, which introduces young people to science and technology and direct interactions with schools. We've paid attention to the way we recruit women and trained women at the more junior levels of the organisation to manage their careers more proactively. Overall, there’s been a significant

improvement in the gender mix across Sony Europe at more senior grades, but we still have a lot of work to do. This is clearly not just a Sony issue - it is a reflection of the industry as a whole. As broadcast engineering struggles to attract the right talent, it seems critical that we attract recruits from the full spectrum of the population. AMC
