inside Mark Hollinger,

Join the conversation I

t is clear that the insatiable appetite for online video and the equally revolutionary impact of social media is providing fresh opportunities across the whole of our industry. Yet for many media organisations around the world the immediate concentration is on the transition to HD and all-digital infrastructures.

It is the aim of IBC to encapsulate both ends of the spectrum. Technology remains at the core of IBC’s offer but perhaps more than ever it is recognised as an enabler that simply changes the way business is done. The IBC Conference provides a platform for thought leaders to define the agenda and for delegates to engage in that conversation, while getting the chance to walk away and interact with thousands of innovations on the showfloor. We pride ourselves on the fact that the Conference is editorially driven. The programme has been thoughtfully produced by experts in accordance to a set of hot topics outlined by the IBC Conference Committee. This year those topics ranged from transmedia and social media to the cloud all of which inform technical, creative and business decisions which media organisations are having to make to keep pace with the connected world. We saw demonstrations of high frame rates and the future of d-cinema. We were presented with a fascinating behind- the-scenes analysis of the incredibly complex London

Olympics broadcast operation and heard insightful keynotes which resonated around the world. In addition, this year IBC expanded The Leaders’ Summit, an elite event running in parallel to the Conference which gave the most senior executives in media organisations a forum to meet and discuss strategic issues from governmental regulation to content rights and consumer needs in a multi-platform world. On behalf of IBC I should like to congratulate all of the IBC2012 Innovation Award winners and in particular to the team at NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories which has, over decades, astounded the world with its foresight, its technical brilliance and its spirit of collaboration to deliver broadcasting breakthroughs from colour television to Ultra-HD. There can be no more fitting winner of the IBC International Honour For Excellence. Within The IBC Daily Executive we are delighted to

present the headline views of authorities in electronic media including representatives from public service and pay TV broadcasters, global advertising agencies, major consumer electronics manufacturers, film and TV content creation giants and social media pioneers. Thank you to everyone who shared their time and inspiration and may I extend an invitation to carry on the shared conversation about our industry’s future.
