Lori McCreary Revelations Entertainment

Region: US

FILM PRODUCER Lori McCreary was at IBC to talk about the work of the Academy of Motion Picture and Sciences’ developing Academy Color Encoding Specification (ACES), which is aimed at maintaining consistent colour throughout production. She sits on the board of the

Producers’ Guild of America, is the founder of the PGA's Motion Picture Technology Committee and is a member of the technology committee of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). With a degree in computer science

from UCLA, she says she is naturally drawn to technology. “Morgan [Freeman] and I founded Revelations Entertainment to produce films as well as educate the entertainment industry on how to positively take advantage of technology,” she says.

“I attended many ASC technology meetings and concluded that DOPs were some of the smartest, most thoughtful leaders in the technology area of entertainment. I wanted to find a way

I wanted to find a way to ‘bottle’ this knowledge and disseminate it

to ‘bottle’ this knowledge and dissemi- nate it. CAS (camera assessment series) and ICAS (image control assessment Series) are the results,” she explains. “Producers struggle with how to budget films when they have no idea what camera, what post facility, what workflow and deliverables will be needed now or in the future. With film we had many years to develop standard budget templates. Now the only thing we can do is make our best guess - and pray,” she said.

Organised by the ASC and PGA, ICAS was started to examine the latest digital cinematography cameras and the related digital workflows.

“The ICAS tests put you close to 4k (ultra HD), and which many people may find more exciting than 3D. Both look better with higher frame rates (HFR) though, and both 4k and 3D could merge with HFR down the line.” “I hope to continue to advise and lead technology manufacturers as Hollywood completes its transition into the digital arena.” GJ

New Keying and Layering Technology

Introducing the new, award winning Avenue Layering Engine – multi layer keying that’s just right for branding, small master control, flypacks and trucks. There’s a frame sync on every input so go ahead and use sources that aren’t genlocked. And the extraordinarily intuitive iPad™ control gives you new freedom in switching a show or event.

Two, independent linear keyers, program/preset background transitions, audio mixing, voice over and breakaway, make it an agile and flexible solution for combining audio and video content. Inputs can be driven by SD, HD or 3G SDI signals from cameras, remote feeds, character generators, graphic and stillstore systems, and video servers. Realtime processing, low latency and serial control make it easy to integrate into your next project.
