outheast Oklahomans who are serious about making their homes more energy efficient are seeing red—also green yellow orange, blue and purple. The reason? They’re taking advantage of Kiamichi Electric Cooperative’s free energy consultation service and thermographic imaging camera to provide them with an on-the-spot snapshot of energy loss in their home.


Kiamichi Electric Cooperative (KEC) purchased an infrared (IR) camera last year to enhance its energy saving services. Infrared cameras are an effective tool for energy auditors because they detect areas of air leakage in a building. IR cameras work by reading surface temperatures in a room and producing a thermographic image. The rainbow spectrum of colors revealed in an image represent varying degrees of temperature. Warm areas appear in shades of yellow and orange and red, white being hottest. Cooler areas appear in varying shades of green, blue, purple and black, with black being coldest.


Todd Minshall, KEC’s energy use specialist, said the camera eliminates a lot of work by providing an image the homeowner can view on the spot. “We know immediately where the problem areas are in a home,” Minshall said. “If hot air is seeping through a crack in the wall, we know it.”

usually finds are improperly insulated attic access panels, air leaks at room corners and around door frames, cracks in windows or doors, missing or compacted wall insulation, air infiltration at light fixtures, and a host of other energy-wasting defects.

One co-op member contacted Minshall because he felt his groundsource heat pump wasn’t operating efficiently. Minshall used the camera to produce a thermal image of the member’s living room, which revealed orange and yellow areas along certain area of the walls.


The infrared image prompted further inspection of the walls, and some disappointing news: The walls were only partially insulated, with uninsulated gaps of one to three feet in some areas.


Minshall said the member wasn’t happy about the findings, but it did explain his higher than normal bills, and provide him with the option to add more insulation. Which brings up an important point: The goal of KEC’s energy inspection is to help member’s make their homes more efficient. “We help members locate areas of energy loss, and we explain possible solutions if needed. What they do with this information is up to them.”
