One surprising turn took us back to the
Spanish Steps, and there at the bottom was the ever so elegant Tea Rooms of Babingtons with its simple English inspired décor, the wooden tables and colonial straw mats, and its lovely silver plated teapots and porcelain crockery. If you want sheer indulgence in a tea-cup shape, this is a must visit. Enter and leave Rome for just a few moments. However, we did not come to Rome to
leave it, and that theme led us to the enduring romance of the Trevi Fountains. Finished in 1762 it is the largest Baroque fountain in the
city and represents a taming of the waters with its giant triumphal pilasters and arches with Tritons guiding Oceanus’ shell chariots. Te Fountain’s modern legend is secured with the tradition of throwing a coin in the fountain to ensure one’s return to the city, and the estimated daily throw of 3,000 euros may indeed be helping the local economy, and certainly restores the memory of the evocative 1954 film Tree Coins in the Fountain. Te city contains a wonderful contrast of
the grand and the accessible – the Coliseum, the Pantheon, the Vatican and the quiet Tiber
river represent fine examples of the former, and there are so many chic, simple and happily inviting bars to represent the latter that memories of Rome will be found on every corner and in every Piazza. I am pleased to report that Rome has lost
none of its timeless charm, and is certainly no less sweet in its offering or love of life. We may have said “Arriverderci Roma” but our coins in the Trevi Fountain assure us that we will return.
