EXECUTIVE HIRE SHOW REVIEW continued

Pictured right with Thwaites’ Ian Brown is Martyn Birch, Director of Didcot Plant, who was making his first visit to the Show.

I liked the Ricoh Arena. The Show had a good atmosphere and it was like stepping back into the old hire shows at Wembley. The range of equipment on show prompted much thought and discussion and, whilst I didn’t go to the Show with a shopping list, I certainly came back with one. We are currently working through a Thwaites order with dealer Leach Lewis and this will certainly include the new 2 tonne Hi Swivel dumper seen on the stand. We’ll also probably start to add Dri-Eaz dehumidifiers to back up our Andrews’ fleet. I’m pleased that Stihl has re-introduced its BT360 two man auger, which it stopped manufacturing, but has now bowed to pressure and updated and re-launced the auger. This is good news as it is a cracking tool. I was also impressed with the OX Group stand. We’ve dealt with Spectrum for a while now and, having added a range of hand tools to its portfolio, it could be attractive as a one-stop supplier. Its product appearance was attractive, and its pricing also appeals.

Paul and Jaime Munkenbeck of M+S Hire Power of Twickenham returned from their annual trip to Jaime’s home country of New Zealand to attend this year’s Show.

The best thing about this year’ s Show was to see new

exhibitors offering a wide array of diversified products. The Show was more energetic as more people had come up with good ideas. There was more creativity. For example, Hobbyweld selling gas was a great idea, as BOC makes life difficult for us as the rental on bottles is so high. Hobbyweld is potentially opening up a new market of professional and hobbyist welders for us. The Skaftray for storing tools on towers is an awesome idea! We need items like these to add value to what we’ve already got.

The lead up to the Show was exciting as there were more exhibitors to arrange to see, as well as an array of Show Deals to look forward to. I’ve always liked the venue and this year, rather than travel up and back in a day, I stayed overnight to get the full benefit of the Show. Many of the stands had that old Hirex buzz and this led me to spend more money than I planned with Stephill, Belle and Hire Supply Co. We’re also currently evaluating compact plant to add to our three depots, so the Show gave me an opportunity to speak to all the leading suppliers. It was also great to catch up with old friends at the Party and I’m still reeling from losing £20 in the casino afterwards.

Rick Biddiscombe, Director of Sydenhams Hire Centres (right) and Warminster Branch Manager Richard Chalmers have now visited each of the six Shows.

With the addition of the Top Tier, there were obviously more exhibitors to see. In the Top Tier, we met Atlantic Coast Studios for the first time, as well as Eurofloor. Parts for Clarke sanders have been difficult to get hold of, and it was good to meet a new supplier of these parts. The Main Hall gave us the opportunity to catch up on much of the new equipment that we’ve not seen before. We particularly liked the Mobile Wash Bay from JL Plant and we are looking at this for our new depots to save putting in inceptor tanks.
