POPPY RIDGE BUNKER PROJECT

NCGA Volunteers of the Year Robert Read (left) and Bill Lang (right) were

recognized with respective tournament offi cial and course rater of the year awards at the annual Tourna- ment Offi cial/Course Raters’ Day held in October at Poppy Hills.

Read is a member of San Ramon GC and joined the volunteer ranks of the NCGA in 2001. The Ala- mo resident and certifi ed rules offi cial is always up for a good debate about the rules of golf. Lang, of Santa Clara, started as a course rater in 2001 and has served as captain since 2008. The Al- maden CC member participated in seven out of 11 ratings in his area in 2011 and served on the course raters’ committee in 2010 and 2011. Several other vol- unteers also earned recognition for their service. Outstand- ing tournament of- fi cials include Mike Weeks, PJ Lowrey, Frank Mann, Mick- ey Zavack and Gary Fox. The outstand- ing course raters for 2011 were Bob Bell, John Farley, Ed Hashim, Pete Imbs and Tom Feutz.

Poppy Ridge Golf Course is looking to improve its golf experience by undertaking a

bunker renovation project. This multi-year process will include removing the existing sand, repairing drainage, installing new liners and replacing the sand. The proposed three-year job will not close the course and is slated to begin in early 2012, weather permitting. “The outcome of this project will be a more enjoy-

able, more consistent condition of the course,” said general manager Todd Cook. Currently, bunkers contain several rocks and other deposits. A local rule on the scorecard warns golf- ers of loose impediments. The bunker project would relieve such issues.
