ARAB SPRING PROBLEMS Another excellent article on the future of the so-called Arab Spring (“Arab Spring May Spell Big Trouble for U.S. in Mideast,” December). I believe the events staged by the Muslim Brotherhood were for one purpose: to eventually establish these countries as absolute, hardline radical Islamist nations. Now look what is happening.

The Egyptian army is slowly turning things over to the Muslim

Brotherhood despite the people’s wishes not to do so. And in Turkey, formerly a good friend of Israel and the United States, relations have become strained. Soon the world will see a unifi ed Muslim nation, bathed in Shariah, comprised of the “states” of Egypt, Turkey, Syria, Algeria, Iran, and undoubtedly the rest of the Mideast.

GINGRICH REDUX

I support Newt Gingrich as our 2012 president (“Gingrich Redux: Can He Surge to the Nomination?” January). Gingrich is an excellent speaker and will restore this country to its former greatness.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will be our next president! margarita j. lopez Miami, Fla.

CLINTON HAS IT RIGHT

I am amazed that Bill Clinton wrote a book that is an actual guide on how to improve the economy, employment and mortgages (“Obama Could Learn From Clinton, Trump,” January). Someone at the White House should sit down with Clinton and take some strong advice — if that person is for the people!

GOP SHOULD BE UNITED It was heartbreaking and so foolish for the GOP contenders to snarl at each other during debates (“GOP Debates: The Power of Political Theater,” January). They all have a common enemy: Obama and the Democratic Congress. So why claw and smear each other? We should be united to get rid of President Obama and his ilk who are trying their best to ruin our country.

OCCUPIERS SPEAK Who is the Occupy Wall Street movement (“Uncensored! These Were the Infamous Occupiers,” January)? It is not the powerful and wealthy 1 percent with their political connections. Occupy Wall Street is community

groups, disillusioned young people, student organizations, and the public who have mobilized and joined together in resistance to currently

unacceptable levels of inequality. American government’s decision- making has been corrupted by armies of lobbyists and oceans of campaign contributions representing the fi nancially well connected. Occupy Wall Street protesters

are in the streets and on campuses to rebel against these institutions, which, if left free to their own devices, would destroy the American way of life as we know it.

‘GREAT GATSBY’ — THEN SOME I would like to comment on Ben Stein’s assertion that The Great Gatsby is the best American novel (“Cherish Your Moments — Before Time Slips Away,” December). The four truly great novels of Kenneth Roberts — Arundle, Rabble in Arms, Northwest Passage, and Oliver Wiswell — are the books that I’ve read and reread since my high school days and which gave me the love and appreciation for America and its beginnings. anthony d’adamo Northport, N.Y.

MISSING HERMAN CAIN

I can’t get my head around the attacks on Herman Cain (“Herman Cain in the Line of Fire,” December). I don’t understand why such attacks were permitted to go on since most of Washington has committed the same or worse things. I would like to see Cain re-enter the race.

OBAMA’S STARK CONTRAST President Obama told 60 Minutes, “It doesn’t really matter who the nominee is gonna be. The core philosophy that they’re expressing is the same. And the contrast in visions between where I want to take this country and where they say they want to take the country is going
