RISK MANAGEMENT

Bob Brown, consultant director at Teamwork IMS, explains how internationally agreed (ISO) Standards are increasingly becoming important benchmarks for management systems in healthcare.

G

overnment and all organisa- tions funding the provision

of health and social care services need to be assured that the service providers have effective manage- ment systems to support the iden- tification and management of risk.

Compliance with ISO Standards is independently assessed and pro- vides the essential evidence of the management commitment of the service providers to continuous improvement of all organisational aspects that impact the quality of care services and patient safety.

For NHS organisations, independ- ent providers of healthcare and social care services and their sup- pliers, ISO certification in one or more of the following are often fundamental stakeholder require- ments:

ISO 9001 is a prime requirement

of local authority and PCT pur- chasing organisations because it takes a whole organisation ap- proach to quality planning and de- livery of health care services.

ISO 27001 effectively addresses the risks relating to the integrity, availability and confidentiality of patient data.

ISO 14001 develops a coherent and risk based approach to man- aging consumption,

waste and

compliance with environmental legislation.

ISO 20000 helps operators of IT related services to demonstrate their commitment to effective IT support based on agreed service

levels and performance measures. BS 25999 is a key standard for Business Continuity Managers to ensure they are fulfilling their statutory obligations.

OHSAS 18001 supports the or- ganisation’s risk management strategy, providing a framework for a safe and healthy working en- vironment.

The benefits to all organisations of using ISO standards to drive improvement programmes and compliance can be extensive in- cluding: operational and financial performance, internal process im- provements and communications; and customer satisfaction, which far exceed any initial investment.
