Tracey Cooper, president of the Infection Prevention Society (IPS), talks to NHE about their new strategy and inspiring aspirations for the future.
T
he Infection Prevention Society consists of professionals within the
NHS and members from the independent sector who work to provide information, guidance and support to members and others to promote infection prevention globally.
Tracey Cooper, IPS president, talked to NHE about aiming high, and maintaining the progress already achieved in the face of global challenges, and disruption closer to home.
High standards
The IPS has recently launched a new five year strategy, with a vision that no person should be harmed by a preventable infec- tion. Its mission is to inform, promote and sustain expert infection prevention policy and practice
This aspirational goal could seem unrealis- tic, given the many challenges around the world in preventing infection, yet aiming high can also push people to achieve great-
er results. Regardless of the practicalities of preventing harm by infection for every person, this vision is something the society believes should be aspired to.
Cooper said: “Our reason for existence is to improve care for patients. We want to be really aspirational – that’s the standard we believe in for our new strategy.
“Our current strategic plan runs from 2011 to 2016. We are realistic: we’re not going to get to the outcome of our vision in five
