“In which way do you consider yourself an innovative creator?”

Do you expect your way of creating artwork to change in the future?

I certainly hope so, but it is impossible to know in which way yet.

Do you embrace the changes in the art industry regarding social media and technology influences?

Completely: It would probably be much more difficult to reach out to an audience without social networks, and technology is good. I believe that if the great masters like Michelangelo or Picasso were alive now, they definitely would use GIMP!

Do you like art? Do you have any preferences for an artist? And/or for creators of artistic work?

Obviously I do, but I lack the time to really spend enough effort looking at what others are doing/have done. There has been such an amazing volume of talent over history. Maybe the unknown architects and craftsmen from the ancient civilizations or Justo Gallego, who built a cathedral almost on his own, would be my favorite artists. People who pursued an impossible dream in spite of being called crazy, put all of their energy into it, and ended up proving they were brilliant.

If so, why is that? What special quality do you like in their work or personalities?

Their “can-do” attitudes, their ambitions, their wills to make it happen, and the final results they achieved are all amazing.

Could we feature your favorite artist, author, designer, architect, filmmaker, etc. in our magazine and/or online?

It would really be great if you could feature Silvio Loffredo.

In which way do you think art and design are different and/or similar?

I think design is just another branch of art, but it distinguishes itself from the other forms in that the designer creates something practical, like a chair or a car, and his/her design is supposed to be produced in the biggest possible scale. I have the same respect for designers and for craftsmen as I do for any other artist.

The purpose of other forms of art would be to please the senses and/or the minds of an audience. Then, of course, selling the products delivered – such as discs, posters, etc. – is a great way for artists to earn money.

Do you aspire to collaborate in your creations with an artist from another artistic discipline?

I am completely open, and it could very much happen, since I was recently approached for collaboration.

“I love to hijack methods and tools from other disciplines to reach my goal. For instance, waterjet technology is used mostly to produce parts for the automotive industry, but I use it to create limited editions. Another example is using a combination of marquetry and goldsmith tools to produce my hand-cut sculptures.”

Do you have a favorite company or exciting other creator with whom you would like to work?

One of the most exciting adventures of our time, in my opinion, is TED: Ideas Worth Spreading (www.ted.com). I would love to contribute in one way or another. Then, there are quite a few amazing creators I would really be proud to work with.

Do you follow any philosophical or psychological approach in making your art?

The previous generation fought for peace and love. I think we need to be more ambitious: It is very good to be at peace with each other, but it is better if we can laugh together. So, laugh and love!

What is your favorite building in the world?

My favorites are the Alhambra in Granada and the Pantheon in Rome. Technically, the Pantheon roof is amazing, and nothing similar was achieved during the almost 2000 years since its construction.

What is your favorite hotel?

I’ve never been there, but one of those luxury houses on a Paradise Island would be my favorite hotel. There are also crazy hotels all around the world. I must confess I am no specialist, but one hotel I recently discovered and was highly impacted by is the Bodega Marques de Riscal by Frank Gehry.

What would be your ideal home?

It should be green, should be near the sea, and would probably be inspired by Mediterranean and Oriental styles.

Do you have any dreams for the future? Being successful enough with my art that I can build my dream home is my dream.

Is there anything else you would like to add to this interview?

My nickname, El Reno, means “the reindeer” in Spanish. I chose this name after someone used to call me this, after the song “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.”
