ingestion. Some people do take water into their mouths when swimming. The constant exposure of the oral membranes to salt water can worsen dehydration and problems associated with it, as well as the fact the salt water can upset your stomach and make you feel nauseous.


If it is the motion issue that is causing the problems, the best approach is a sea-sickness remedy, whether it is an oral medication or the common patch behind the ear. Since all of these medications can interact with the central nervous system, try them out at home before your event.


The second problem of taking water into your mouth when you swim is more difficult, since the real answer is to stop doing it! However, this will require training of breath-control techniques, exhaling drills and other methods to change the way you exhale. Working with a swimming snorkel may make you more aware of your inhaling and exhaling paterns, so that would be worth a try. 
