This is certainly one of the best products on the market. Made entirely from natural ingredients, it’s fortifi ed with 18 diff erent vitamins and minerals to give our bodies a healthful helping hand. Despite only being available in three tasty fl avours in the UK (rather than a whopping 19 in the US), and being more of a pre-training snack than a heavy-duty workout companion, this is a great bar.

LUCOZADE BODY FUEL ENERGY BAR With a reasonable taste and consistency, coupled with the stereotypical look of a cereal bar, this is a pleasant choice for a snack before or aſt er training. However, much like the Multipower bar, it fails to deliver any particular selling point and includes too many additives. The last energy bar that Lucozade produced had B vitamins to help with energy production but sadly these have been sacrifi ced for a more commercial taste.

62% NAKD “NUDIE” BARS
The Natural Balance Foods Company doesn’t pretend that it is producing energy bars for sport performance – it isn’t. However, this lit le “nudie” bar that they produce is worth a mention as it is almost as simple as a bar can get. Most bars in the range only have four or fi ve ingredients – just “Raw fruits, nuts and spices smashed together”, as the slogan says. The nut content means that fat percentage is actually very high, but in real terms it’s only 7g per 35g bar. While the carb content is too low for training or refuelling eff ectively, if you want a quick healthy snack before training this is a good one.

With fi ve separate fl avours, this range of bars from Zipvit has the broadest choice for the athlete, who can choose from chocolate-coated, yoghurt-coated and uncoated bars. With such a selection, it is diffi cult to make general comments, but the brand has been developed in line with current nutrition research, fortifi ed with vitamins and then tested on some of the top endurance sportspeople in the world. The uncoated chocolate bar has a hugely impressive fat-to-carb ratio.
