PAGE 4 | AUGUST 2011 Signs on Utility Poles Present Hazard A

lthough seemingly innocent enough, putting signs or other items on utility poles creates serious safety hazards.

Staples, nails, and tacks used to hang signs—as well as the signs themselves—pose dangers to Tri-County Electric lineworkers who must climb poles when restoring power following storms or while performing routine maintenance. Posters or other objects (birdhouses, balloons, flags, and

even basketball nets) can create dangerous obstacles. Also, the nails and tacks left behind from signs can snag utility workers’ boots or puncture safety clothing, making lineworkers vulnerable to slipping or even electrocution. In addition to being hazardous, tampering with utility

poles can be costly. Posting signs or attaching other objects to utility poles is illegal according to the following Oklahoma state statute:

§21 1838. Attaching unauthorized objects upon utility poles prohibited. It is unlawful to attach or insert any object with nails or tacks upon poles erected for the support of electric, telephone, utility or power lines; provided, however, the provisions of this act shall not interfere with the inherent rights of the owner. Laws 1963, c. 356, § 1.

have similar laws against signage on utility poles. Not only is attaching signage to utility poles dangerous and illegal, it’s ugly. The signs aren’t always picked up, leading to litter when they fall off.
