Lengthy outages over July 4 weekend Now, more than ever, it’s time to watch the peak!

lines created excessive loading on the system, which resulted in the breakers opening at the substation. Restoration of power was difficult because everyone’s electrical appliances were trying to come back on at the same time, and downstream protective devices experienced more current demand and were more likely to trip open or be damaged. Some of these protective devices were bypassed or replaced to allow restoration of power.

K

KEC continues to review the situation. In the meantime, the co-op encourages members to join in its effort to “Beat the Peak.” Kiamichi Electric’s Beat the Peak program is a volunteer effort to lower system- wide energy use “peaks.”

Peaks occur when large numbers of co-op members use electricity at the same time. For Kiamichi Electric, system peaks tend to occur between 4 pm and 8 pm in July and August. That’s when people typically return from work, turn up the AC, do laundry, wash dishes, watch TV and use a variety of large appliances that run on electricity.

System peaks are a determining factor in what KEC— and eventually co-op members— pay for wholesale power throughout the year. By reducing energy use during periods of extreme use, co-op members can

iamichi Electric Cooperative (KEC) members in the Longtown area experienced a power outage on July 3. Abnormally high demand coupled with faults on distribution

help curb the peak and control wholesale power costs. Wholesale power costs typically account for almost 75 percent of every member’s electric bill.

As KEC continues to balance demand, cost and availability of power, member cooperation and participation is critical. You can help by conserving energy during peak periods, and making energy conservation a habit.

For suggestions on how to lower your usage during peak periods, please see page 2. For additional energy saving information, please visit www.kiamichielectric. org or call 800-888-2731. When you call, be sure to ask about our free home energy audits!
