Noteworthy NCGA
POPPY HILLS RENOVATION The NCGA has started
the process to obtain permits for a POPPY HILLS golf course and clubhouse renovation. A driving force be-
hind the renovation of the NCGA members’ course is the conservation of water. The 24-year-old course
already has an excellent environmental track record through its 100% utiliza- tion of recycled water for irrigation, but the overhaul further addresses water consumption by reducing irrigated areas of turf. The multi-year, multi-
step process will: • Replace irrigation
system to better manage water usage • Redesign and lessen doglegs to help the course unfold more naturally • Replace and redesign all putting greens
• Sand cap fairways to
greatly improve drainage • Renovate the club-
house including restaurant and restrooms
It is anticipated that it
will take 12-24 months to complete permitting for the work. The project will proceed with the Robert Trent Jones Jr. Group once the permit is obtained and given a favorable economic environment. During the renovation, the practice facility and restaurant will stay open during the fi rst phase (three-fi ve months), but it will be necessary to close both at some point in the process. A portion of the events
normally played at Poppy Hills will move to Poppy Ridge and the remainder will move to local courses worthy of championship golf. “We are excited about the prospect of improv-
POPPY HILLS
ing Poppy Hills,” says NCGA/Poppy Holding CEO Lyn Nelson. “We take pride in our golf course and feel this is a wonderful opportu- nity to enhance the layout and playing conditions. Providing an unmatched golf experience and value for NCGA mem- bers will always be a top priority for the Association and this project seeks to enhance that experience and make our members’ course one of the fi nest in the nation.”

Magee Named New Director of Championships and Events RYAN MAGEE accepted the position of NCGA director of champion- ships and events replacing Roger Val who retired last month after
29 years of service. Magee formerly worked for the NCGA in 2003 as assistant director of rules and competitions for fi ve tournament seasons before taking the director of rules and competitions position with the Massachusetts Golf Association. Most recently, he served as the manager of the South Texas region for the Texas Golf Association. The Salem State College graduate was recently married to Diana who is a veterinarian.
IGN POSTING ENDS NCGA members playing outside the region will now need to post their scores via the Internet, on their mobile phones or at an NCGA posting computer when they
return to the area as the NCGA is no longer participating in the International Golf Network (IGN) that allowed such posting at out-of-area golf courses.
SPECIAL DISCOUNT – Poppy Hills Weekday Rates for Members: Through March 31, Fridays are weekdays at Poppy Hills. Take advantage of the low NCGA member rate an extra day through the winter months.
